MAQUIA is Shueisha’s monthly beauty title, and among Japan’s major beauty magazines it leans hardest toward makeup. Its gifts routinely include full-size products from brands like SK-II and SUQQU, for a cover price under ¥2,000.

This page tracks the current issue, explains how MAQUIA’s editions differ – there are usually three or four, and one of them has no gift at all – and archives what came with recent issues. It is updated every month.

The November 2026 issue marks MAQUIA’s 22nd anniversary, and the line-up is unusually strong. It goes on sale on 24 September.

What’s in this month’s gift

The standard edition centres on base makeup. It carries SUQQU The Foundation e at 4g – drawn from a 30g product retailing at ¥14,300, so roughly ¥2,600 of foundation – along with SUQQU The Primer. Added to that are L’Occitane Immortelle Overnight Reset Serum and Immortelle Reset Triple Essence. Japanese outlets put the combined retail equivalent at around ¥3,200 against a ¥950 cover price.

The Shueisha Special was the standout of the month across all Japanese beauty titles. It carries an SK-II Facial Treatment Essence mini plus two sachets of the Facial Treatment Serum launched in July 2026; a full-size d’Alba plump lip balm worth about ¥2,420, supplied in one of four shades chosen at random with no option to select or exchange; and three different Revicis sheet masks worth about ¥2,700, from Harasawa Pharmaceutical, a Japanese manufacturer founded over a century ago. Combined retail equivalent roughly ¥6,806. It sold out during pre-order before being restocked.

The Shueisha Special supplement takes a colour-cosmetics angle instead: a Revlon Sheer Balm Crayon, a SENSAI foundation and a Rosy Rosa foundation puff.

The fourth version, simply called the supplement, carries no furoku whatsoever. It is sold for its cover, which features Kyomoto Taiga of SixTONES.

How MAQUIA’s editions work

MAQUIA has the most confusing edition structure of any Japanese beauty magazine, and getting it wrong is the single most common ordering mistake. Four versions of the November issue went on sale the same day. The editorial content is identical across all of them. What differs is the cover and the gift.

Edition name What it means
Standard edition (通常版) The default. Usually the most balanced gift.
Shueisha Special (集英社スペシャル版) A separate product with an entirely different gift, often the most valuable of the month.
Shueisha Special supplement (集英社スペシャル増刊版) Another distinct gift again. Does not include the standard or Shueisha Special items.
Supplement (増刊) Frequently carries no gift at all. Sold for the cover, usually a male idol.

Two practical consequences. First, “the November issue of MAQUIA” is not a precise enough instruction to order on – always match the gift description. Second, if a listing seems unusually cheap, check whether it is the gift-free supplement. Shueisha states this explicitly in its own announcements, but resale listings frequently do not.

What kind of magazine is MAQUIA?

MAQUIA is published monthly by Shueisha and launched in 2004, reaching its 22nd anniversary with the November 2026 issue. It targets women in their twenties and thirties, sitting between VOCE’s younger readership and Biteki’s older one.

Its distinguishing trait is the emphasis on makeup. Where VOCE and Biteki weight their gifts toward skincare sachets, MAQUIA regularly includes foundations, lip products and tools – and more full-size items than either rival. Recent issues have carried SUQQU, SK-II, Clé de Peau Beauté, NARS, Lancôme and d’Alba.

Release day falls between the 21st and 24th of most months. Cover prices run from about ¥870 for a gift-free supplement to ¥1,800 for the heaviest editions.

Where to buy MAQUIA outside Japan

MAQUIA is published for the domestic market and has no overseas distribution. The digital edition carries the articles only, since a sachet cannot be attached to an e-book. Shueisha itself warns readers that online bookshops sell out and recommends physical stores – which tells you how quickly the strong editions go.

Two complications apply to beauty issues specifically. Cosmetics sachets contain liquids and creams, which some countries treat differently from printed matter. And anything Japan classifies as a quasi-drug faces import restrictions that vary by country. For a full comparison of the routes available, see our guide to where to buy Japanese magazines with gifts online.

Shueisha has also warned about fraudulent sites selling MAQUIA at inflated prices. Buying from an established seller matters more with this title than most.

Two patterns are visible. MAQUIA routinely includes full-size or near-full-size products – the d’Alba lip in November, the Etvos base in October. And the gift-free or gift-light edition appears often enough that checking the contents before ordering is not optional.

Frequently asked questions

Which edition should I buy?
The articles are identical, so it comes down to the gift. Check the list for the specific issue – and confirm the edition you are looking at actually has one.

Is it true some editions have no gift?
Yes. MAQUIA’s plain supplement frequently carries no furoku and is sold for its cover. This is stated in Shueisha’s own announcements but often omitted from resale listings.

What does “random shade” mean?
Occasionally a single product inside a gift comes in an unspecified colour – November’s d’Alba lip balm is one of four shades, with no option to choose or exchange. This applies to that product only; the edition itself is never random.

Can I buy the gift without the magazine?
No. Japanese publishing guidelines require that a furoku is not an item normally sold separately from its magazine.

When does the next issue come out?
Release day falls between the 21st and 24th of most months. The next issue is listed at the bottom of this page.

Are the products genuine?
Yes. Brands supply them under licence. They are made for the Japanese market and sit outside the brand’s warranty, but they are not counterfeit.

Next issue

The December 2026 issue is expected in the third or fourth week of October. Gift details are usually announced about a month ahead of the on-sale date – we’ll update this page as soon as they land.
