What Is the LuLuLun Hydra Series?

LuLuLun Hydra is a line of lotion-type sheet masks that pair hydration with one extra ingredient for a specific skin concern; the name comes from “hydrator”. Where LuLuLun’s earlier masks focused on delivering moisture and beauty ingredients to suit age-related skin changes, Hydra keeps the same moisture-first idea but targets skin concerns everyone has, regardless of age. LuLuLun describes them as supplement-like lotion face masks. Each mask is named after its key ingredient, so PD stands for PDRN, EX for exosome and AZ for azelaic acid.

Like LuLuLun’s other lotion masks, Hydra masks are made to be used every day in place of toner, which is why most come in a 28-sheet box as well as a 7-sheet pouch.

LuLuLun Hydra Masks at a Glance

The 8 Hydra masks differ mainly in key ingredient and in how moisturising they feel. LuLuLun’s own chart places them from the lightest, AZ, to the most moisturising, PD and 5ALA.

Which LuLuLun Hydra Mask Should You Choose?

Choose a Hydra mask by your main skin concern and by how much moisture you want: AZ for oily skin and pores, V for all-round daily care, CX for soothing care, ID for texture and pores, EX for a translucent look, and PD or 5ALA for firmness and the richest moisture. If you’re not sure, the 7-sheet pouches let you try several.

LuLuLun Hydra EX Mask (Exosome): Bounce and Translucency

LuLuLun Hydra EX Mask (ルルルン ハイドラ EX マスク, “HYDRA-EX-MASK” on the box) is the exosome mask in the series, made as daily ageing care for bouncy, translucent-looking skin. Its key ingredient is a human adipose-derived mesenchymal cell exosome, which LuLuLun lists as a skin-conditioning ingredient and says contains no stem cells, alongside glutathione, arbutin and lecithin. The ingredient list also includes ceramides AP and NP and atelocollagen. By “ageing care”, LuLuLun means care that gives skin moisture and elasticity to suit its age.

For the full ingredient list and how to use it, see our LuLuLun Hydra EX Mask guide.

LuLuLun Hydra AZ Mask (Azelaic Acid): Rough Skin and Oiliness

LuLuLun Hydra AZ Mask (ルルルン ハイドラ AZ マスク) contains an azelaic acid derivative (potassium azeloyl diglycinate), which LuLuLun lists as an ingredient that helps prevent rough skin, with mandelic acid and niacinamide. It is the lightest Hydra mask, made for rough skin, oiliness and visible pores.

LuLuLun Hydra V Mask (Vitamins): All-Round Care

LuLuLun Hydra V Mask (ルルルン ハイドラ V マスク) combines 7 vitamins, including vitamin C derivatives, a vitamin A derivative (retinyl palmitate) and niacinamide, with 7 herbal extracts. LuLuLun positions it as all-round care for moist, glowing skin with less visible pores, and its sheet is designed to fit snugly with a lifting feel.

LuLuLun Hydra PD Mask (PDRN): Firmness and Gloss

LuLuLun Hydra PD Mask (ルルルン ハイドラ PD マスク) contains two PDRNs, one derived from salmon and one from ginseng, plus niacinamide and a vitamin C derivative, and it is one of the two most moisturising Hydra masks. LuLuLun made it for skin that looks less firm due to dryness. See our LuLuLun Hydra PD Mask guide for its full ingredient list.

LuLuLun Hydra CX Mask (CICA Exosome): Soothing Care

LuLuLun Hydra CX Mask (ルルルン ハイドラ CX マスク) is built around centella (cica) ingredients, which LuLuLun calls CICA exosome, with ceramides and panthenol. LuLuLun positions it as soothing care to keep skin healthy, and its box describes a black sheet made with binchotan charcoal.

LuLuLun Hydra ID Mask (Idebenone): Dullness, Face Line and Pores

LuLuLun Hydra ID Mask (ルルルン ハイドラ ID マスク) contains idebenone (hydroxydecyl ubiquinone), which LuLuLun lists as an antioxidant for the product, with glutathione and arbutin for glow and niacinamide and peach leaf extract for tightening. LuLuLun made it for dullness from uneven texture, a less defined face line and visible pores.

LuLuLun Hydra 5ALA Mask: Firmness and Moisture

LuLuLun Hydra 5ALA Mask (ルルルン ハイドラ 5ALA マスク) contains aminolevulinic acid phosphate (5-ALA), which LuLuLun lists as a skin-conditioning ingredient, with peptides. LuLuLun made it for skin that looks older because of dryness-related dullness or a lack of firmness, and it is one of the two most moisturising Hydra masks.

LuLuLun Hydra F Mask (Fullerenes): Tightening and Pores

LuLuLun Hydra F Mask (ルルルン ハイドラ F マスク) contains fullerenes and what LuLuLun calls black serum ingredients on a black sheet, for skin with visible pores and rough texture. It is sold only in a 7-sheet pouch and isn’t included in LuLuLun’s current Hydra chart.

Other LuLuLun Hydra Products

Besides the 8 regular masks, the Hydra name covers four more products: an overnight eye sheet (Hydra Eye Filler), an oil serum, a bar soap and a store-limited mask (Hydra S).

LuLuLun Hydra Eye Filler

LuLuLun Hydra Eye Filler (ルルルン ハイドラ アイ フィラー) is an overnight eye-area sheet that you put on before bed and sleep in. LuLuLun says the oil-serum sheet, developed with a pharmaceutical company, stays on without adhesive through the affinity of its oils with skin sebum, and keeps the eye area moisturised for up to 6 hours. Its ingredients include retinyl palmitate (a vitamin A derivative), niacinamide, panthenol, ceramide NP and acetyl hexapeptide-8. LuLuLun recommends it as special care once or twice a week; a pouch holds 12 sheets for 6 uses and costs ¥1,430 in Japan.

For the full ingredient list and how to use it, see our LuLuLun eye mask guide.

How to Use LuLuLun Hydra Masks

Use a Hydra mask after washing your face, in place of toner, morning or night. LuLuLun’s FAQ says to leave its lotion-type masks on for about 5 to 10 minutes, then pat in the remaining essence and seal it with a milk or cream.

  1. Wash your face, then unfold the sheet and fit it to your eyes and mouth.
  2. Press out any air and lift the cheek slits along your jawline.
  3. Leave it on for about 5 to 10 minutes.
  4. Take it off, wipe your face with the folded sheet and pat in the essence.
  5. Finish with a milk or cream.

LuLuLun’s FAQ says its lotion-type masks are made for daily use, morning and night, and that its face masks are alcohol-free (no ethanol). Store the box at room temperature, not in the fridge, and use an unopened box within about 3 years of manufacture.
