Rohto says its plant-derived sheet holds plenty of serum, clings to the skin and lets the serum soak into the stratum corneum (the outer layer of skin). Melano CC Mask Plus (集中対策マスクプラス, 10 Sheets)

Melano CC Mask Plus is a 10-sheet pack (150 mL) with a thick sheet that holds about 1.5 times as much serum per sheet as the 28-sheet intensive mask, according to Rohto. Rohto says the serum soaks in deep (to the stratum corneum) without stickiness, and that it moisturises skin after sun exposure and makes pores less noticeable through moisture. It costs ¥660 on Rohto’s online shop.

Rohto recommends the Mask Plus for special care, while the 28-sheet pack is made for busy everyday use. Its FAQ also says you can use the serum left in the pack on your neck, hands and body, but not to store it for later use.

Melano CC+ (Melano CC Plus) AZmask

Melano CC+ (Melano CC Plus, メラノCC＋) is Rohto’s newer Melano CC series built on a “vitamin C + α” formula design, and its only product so far is the AZmask. The AZmask is a 7-sheet pore-care mask with pure vitamin C (ascorbic acid, a moisturising ingredient) and pure azelaic acid (a skin-conditioning ingredient), which Rohto says helps bring out vitamin C’s effect. It costs ¥880 on Rohto’s online shop.

Rohto says the AZmask cares for pore concerns, namely sebum, open-looking pores, darkened pores and rough texture, and helps control excess sebum when you wipe your skin with the folded mask. Its serum-soaked sheet uses Bemliese®, a material Rohto chose because it clings closely to the skin. Rohto recommends it for people with pore concerns, people who want smoother-looking skin, and people interested in new skincare ingredients.

Melano CC+ AZmask Ingredients: Full List

The AZmask lists 25 ingredients on Rohto’s Japanese site. Besides pure vitamin C and azelaic acid, highlighted in the table, it contains a second vitamin C derivative, riboflavin, bakuchiol, a vitamin E derivative, lemon and grapefruit extracts, fragrance and preservatives including methylparaben.

How to Use Melano CC Mask

Use a Melano CC mask after toner, then follow with serum and moisturiser. Rohto’s routine runs: face wash, lotion (toner), mask, serum, then a gel, cream or milk from the Melano CC moisturizers, and UV milk in the morning.

Rohto’s steps for the Mask Plus:

1. After toner, take out one sheet and unfold it carefully. Fold the eye flaps outward.
2. Line the mask up with your eyes and mouth and press it onto your whole face. To treat the eye area, lay the folded flaps over your eyes last.
3. Leave it on for about 3 minutes, then peel it off.
4. Smooth any serum left on your skin with your palms.

For the AZmask, Rohto says to press the mask on with your hands after toner, leave it for about 7 minutes, then fold it and wipe areas of concern to remove unwanted dead skin. Rohto doesn’t give a time for the 28-sheet intensive mask.

Rohto’s precautions for the Mask Plus and AZmask:

• Don’t sleep in it. Rohto warns against long use or sleeping with the mask on.
• Take out contact lenses first, and close your eyes when using it over the eye area.
• Store the pack zip-side up. Rohto says it may leak if the zip faces down, and to close it tightly after use.
• Use one sheet once. Don’t reuse a mask or put extra sheets back in the pack.
