Hangyodon finished 9th in the 2026 Sanrio Character Ranking, ahead of Little Twin Stars and Badtz-Maru. You would expect a top-10 character to have plenty of merchandise. Yet between January and late September 2026, Sanrio announced more than 1,200 product releases, and only five of them were Hangyodon’s own line.
That gap is the whole story of collecting him. Hangyodon merchandise isn’t rare because nobody wants it; it’s rare because Japanese retailers give him a slot in a group lineup rather than a collection of his own. This guide explains who he is, why his goods are so thin on the ground, what actually exists in Japan, and how to get it from outside the country.

Hangyodon is a green half-fish character from China, and Sanrio’s official profile describes him as good at making people laugh but secretly a lonely romantic. He wants to be a hero and it rarely works out, which is the joke the designs keep coming back to. His birthday is 14 March, and his favourite foods are chilled Chinese noodles, prawn crackers and hot pot.
One detail on his profile tells you a lot about why people like him: his listed hobby is collecting Hangyodon merchandise. He is a character who is a fan of himself, which is also why the underdog framing lands so well with collectors abroad.
Sayuri, Itaro and the Rest of the Cast

Hangyodon rarely appears alone in product artwork. Sayuri, an octopus and his close friend, turns up on most of his own collections, and Itaro and Otamaro appear as well. If you’re hunting for designs, it’s worth searching for Sayuri too, because a lot of Hangyodon items are really Hangyodon-and-Sayuri items.
He’s Top 10, but His Goods Aren’t
We counted every goods announcement on Sanrio’s official news feed from 1 January to 25 September 2026, which comes to 1,226 releases, and recorded which characters each one featured. The pattern is stark: a release is either Hello Kitty’s, or it belongs to a group.
| Character | 2026 ranking | Releases as the only character | Releases they appear in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hello Kitty | 5th | 164 | 829 |
| Pompompurin | 1st | 66 | 501 |
| Cinnamoroll | 2nd | 29 | 594 |
| Kuromi | 4th | 26 | 614 |
| Pochacco | 3rd | 11 | 351 |
| My Melody | 7th | 6 | 535 |
| Hangyodon | 9th | 5 | 247 |
| Tuxedosam | 8th | 1 | 125 |
Hangyodon appeared in 247 announcements, so he is far from forgotten. But almost all of those are Sanrio Characters ranges where he is one design among five or ten, and the buyer often can’t choose which character they get. Only five releases in nine months were built around him.
This is why his goods feel harder to find than his popularity suggests. A Hello Kitty fan can walk into a Japanese store any week of the year and find something. A Hangyodon fan has perhaps five moments a year where a whole collection is theirs, and the rest of the time they are buying one slot out of a multi-character set. What Hangyodon Goods Actually Exist in Japan
His releases fall into four recognisable patterns. Knowing them is more useful than a product list, because the patterns repeat every year while individual products sell out.
1. Sanrio’s Atarikuji Lottery

Atarikuji is a lottery run by Sanrio where every ticket wins a prize, and it is the single most reliable source of Hangyodon goods. He got two in 2026. The September edition, themed on bath time with Sayuri, was ¥880 per draw with 13 prize tiers including a humidifier, a cushion, a bath clock, a pump bottle, a shampoo brush, acrylic keychains, face towels, storage boxes and mini totes, plus a tissue box cover for whoever draws the last ticket.
Both editions were sold at Sanrio shops and convenience stores across Japan. The catch is that you can’t choose your prize, and lot reservations aren’t accepted, so specific prizes usually reach collectors through resale rather than directly.
2. Birthday Collections in Late February

His birthday is 14 March, and the clothing chain Avail timed a Hangyodon collection to it, launching on 28 February with drawstring pouches, shopping bags and mascot charms, including artwork made only for Avail. It went on sale in Avail stores and on Shimamura Park, the chain’s Japanese online store, from noon on release day.
If you only check for Hangyodon goods once a year, late February into March is the window. That’s also when the other Atarikuji of 2026 landed, on 28 February at ¥800 per draw, themed on a night in with Sayuri and topped by a plush for the last ticket.

3. Variety Chain Ranges Under ¥500

Thank You Mart, a Japanese variety chain where everything sits at one price, ran a Hangyodon range from mid-June with 17 product types at ¥429 each: pouches, a folding umbrella case, a long hair clip, a rubber keychain, socks, a toothbrush set, a clear pen case, memo pads, stickers and more. Sayuri and Itaro appear on it too.
This is the cheapest way into Hangyodon goods by a wide margin, and the most volume you’ll see in one collection. It’s also the kind of range that disappears without a restock once the chain rotates its stock.
4. One-Off Licensed Products

The rest arrives as single products from Japanese manufacturers. In 2026 that included the Hashy TOP-IN bath plush, a mesh Hangyodon you can actually wash with, roughly 10 cm wide by 13.5 cm tall, with a bell inside, at ¥1,760 through the maker’s Japanese online stores. These are easy to miss because they’re announced once and never form a collection.
5. One Slot in a Sanrio Characters Range

This is where most of those 247 appearances live. In September 2026 alone, Hangyodon turned up in Avail’s Kuromi birthday campaign as one of the characters wearing a Kuromi costume, in AS KNOW AS plus’s Sanrio pet toys at ¥990, in Don Quijote’s turntable clip air freshener at ¥1,628, and in Classico’s Sanrio medical uniforms. Our roundups of Kuromi and My Melody releases cover several of these in detail.
Ranges like these are the most consistent supply of Hangyodon goods, and often the only option outside his birthday season. Check whether the set is sold by character or packed blind before you buy, because plenty of them are random.

Late February to mid-March. His 14 March birthday is the one date Japanese retailers plan around, and 2026 saw both an Avail collection and an Atarikuji land in the same week.
Whenever a new Atarikuji is announced. Sanrio posts these a week or two ahead of release. Two of his five 2026 collections were lotteries, so this is the most productive thing to watch.
Sanrio Character Ranking season, roughly April to June. Voting runs in spring and Sanrio releases ranking goods alongside it, which is one of the few times every character in the top tier gets merchandise at once.
Halloween and New Year. Seasonal Sanrio Characters ranges pull in a wider cast than usual, which is when characters outside the top five tend to appear.
How to Buy Hangyodon Goods From Outside Japan
Order From the kachicollect Catalog
kachicollect is a Japan-based shop that only carries products made for the Japanese market. The catalog already lists Japan-only Sanrio items, including the Hello Kitty charms and die-cut stickers sold through Yamato Transport’s Japanese shop and the Coleman × HELLO KITTY tote and pouch bundled with a Japanese magazine, alongside Japanese beauty, snacks and tea.
You pay the listed price plus shipping, with no proxy fees, and the total including duties is shown at checkout before you pay. Payment is in your local currency by Visa, Mastercard or JCB, so you don’t need a Japanese address or card, and orders ship worldwide with tracking in about 7 to 14 days.
Request Anything That Isn’t in the Catalog
Hangyodon collections are tied to one chain or one lottery, so they usually won’t be in the catalog. Send us the product link from a Japanese marketplace and you’ll get an instant quote, then buy it directly on kachicollect with no service fees. This is the practical route for Atarikuji prizes and sold-out chain collections, which mostly circulate on Mercari and Yahoo! Auctions.
eBay
Hangyodon items do appear on eBay, and because supply is thin the markups can be steep, especially on plush and Atarikuji prizes. Counterfeit Sanrio goods are common enough that listing photos alone aren’t proof. Check the seller’s feedback and ask for photos of the actual item, its tags and its packaging.
Amazon
Amazon carries some Sanrio merchandise, but chain-exclusive and lottery items rarely reach it. What you find is usually listed by third-party sellers rather than the brand, which means a markup and no guarantee the item is genuine.
Tips Before You Buy
Check whether the item is random. Atarikuji prizes, capsule toys and blind-packed mascots don’t let you choose the character, which matters more for Hangyodon than for a character with his own line. Buying a single identified item second-hand is more reliable than a sealed pack.
Search for Sayuri as well. Many of his designs feature both, and Japanese listings are often titled after whichever character the seller noticed first.
Assume no restock. The chain collections here were single runs. Once Avail or Thank You Mart rotates its stock, that artwork doesn’t come back.
Check the condition of secondhand items. For Atarikuji prizes and older plush, ask the seller for photos that show the actual item, its tags and any packaging before you buy.
Remember that Japanese online stores stay in Japan. Shimamura Park, Thank You Mart’s online shop and Sanrio’s Japanese online shop all deliver within Japan only.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Hangyodon popular in Japan?
Yes. He placed 9th in the 2026 Sanrio Character Ranking, in the top ten alongside Pompompurin, Cinnamoroll, Pochacco, Kuromi and Hello Kitty. The shortage of merchandise reflects how retailers allocate collections, not a lack of interest.
Why are there so few Hangyodon goods?
Japanese retailers build collections around the characters that shift the most stock, and everyone else gets a slot in a Sanrio Characters range. In the first nine months of 2026, Hangyodon appeared in 247 goods announcements but only five were his own collection.
When is Hangyodon’s birthday?
14 March. Retailers time collections to it, so late February and early March are the best weeks of the year to look for new Hangyodon items.
Who is the octopus with Hangyodon?
That’s Sayuri, his close friend, and she appears on most of his own collections. Itaro and Otamaro show up in his artwork as well.
Can I buy Hangyodon Atarikuji prizes online?
Not by drawing a ticket, since the lottery runs in Japanese shops and convenience stores. Individual prizes appear on Japanese marketplaces after release, and you can send us the link to buy one through kachicollect.
Conclusion
Hangyodon is a top-10 Sanrio character with the merchandise footprint of a minor one, and once you know that, collecting him gets easier. Watch the Atarikuji announcements, watch late February for his birthday collections, and accept that the rest of the year he arrives as one design inside a Sanrio Characters range.
