Japan sells a lot of matcha latte powder, and from the outside the bags look interchangeable. They are not. Some dissolve in cold milk and some only work with boiling water. Some contain no milk powder at all. One has creaming powder listed before the sugar, and in another the matcha does not appear until sixth on the ingredient list.

Below is every option we could verify from the makers’ own published specifications, in one table, followed by picks for each way of actually drinking it.

Every Option at a Glance

Eighteen products from six makers. “Matcha position” is where matcha falls in the ingredient list, which Japanese labelling law orders by weight — the single most useful number on the pack. A dash means the maker does not publish a full list in a form we could verify.

Our Picks

The First Bag to Buy

Start with a standard sweetened matcha milk in a resealable bag. Hot water alone makes a finished drink, there is nothing to measure beyond the spoonful on the pack, and a bag costs less per cup than sticks.

The example above is built on milk powder made from Hokkaido milk, and the maker states that it dissolves in cold water and cold milk as well as hot — which means one bag covers both hot and iced without you having to decide now.

Best for Iced Matcha

Cold solubility is a formulation choice, not a given. Only some Japanese powders say on the pack that they dissolve in cold water or cold milk, and if yours does not, stirring it into a cold glass produces lumps that never break up.

The stick version of the same maker’s matcha latte states that it dissolves in water as well as milk, hot or cold, which makes it the low-effort iced option: tear, pour over cold milk, stir.

If You Want the Most Matcha

Compare ingredient lists, not front-of-pack wording. Across the products we verified, matcha sits third in Ito En’s rich Kyoto Uji version, fourth in both AGF products, fifth in the Tsujiri matcha milk, and sixth in the Nittoh sticks. Third is the highest we found in a sweetened latte powder.

That product also names its origin — matcha from Kyoto Prefecture — which most of the category does not. Matcha high in the list plus a named growing region is the strongest combination available here.

Best Without Dairy in the Bag

One Uji matcha latte mix is made from matcha, sugar and wasanbon sugar and nothing else. No milk powder, no creaming powder, no emulsifier — the shortest ingredient list in this guide. You add the milk, so soy, oat and almond all work and you control the strength.

Best Additive-Free Option

Most of this category contains emulsifiers, stabilisers and pH adjusters, and two of the products we checked use aspartame and acesulfame K as sweeteners. If that matters to you, Ito En sells a version stated to contain no flavouring, no artificial sweetener and no emulsifier, made with two different matchas. The same maker also sells an unsweetened version so you can add your own sugar.

Best Sticks to Travel With

Sticks are a single measured dose in a sealed sachet, which survives a suitcase better than an opened bag and does not need a spoon. Serving sizes vary more than you would expect — 9.7 g, 10.5 g, 12 g and 24 g across the products here — so a stick is not a standard unit.

The Nittoh sticks are 12 g each, made with Uji matcha, at 49 kcal per stick with caffeine stated at 0.02 g. The maker also notes that green specks floating or settling in the cup are simply the matcha, which is a useful thing to know before you assume something is wrong.

The best known stick product is the Starbucks Premium Mix matcha latte made for the Japanese market by Nestlé Japan, in 24 g sticks at about 103 kcal each. It is a Japan-market product rather than part of the global Starbucks range.

Best Unsweetened, for Control and Cooking

If you would rather build the drink yourself, skip the latte mixes and use unsweetened matcha processed to dissolve. It makes a latte with whatever sweetness you choose, and unlike a sugar-and-milk mix it also works in cakes, ice cream and glazes.

Best for Heavy Use

If matcha lattes are a daily habit, or you are making them for other people, the catering formats are far cheaper per cup. AGF’s professional line comes as 10.5 g single-serve sachets in boxes of 30, and Mitsui Norin sells a 500 g catering bag. These are sold to cafés but nothing stops a household buying them.

One detail worth noting in the AGF professional product: creaming powder is listed before sugar, the only product here where sugar is not the first ingredient. It is built for a creamier, milkier cup rather than a sweeter one.

Worth Knowing: The Adjacent Flavours

Two products sit beside the matcha lattes on the same shelf and use the same format. A hojicha milk powder swaps matcha for roasted tea and appears in autumn and winter, and a green lemon tea with Uji matcha and fermented lemon juice is a summer product. Both rotate seasonally, so neither is available year round.

How to Compare Them Yourself

Where matcha sits in the ingredient list. Japanese labels are ordered by weight, so this is the closest thing to a matcha percentage you will get. Third is good for this category; sixth means the drink is mostly sugar, dextrin and milk solids with matcha for colour and a hint of flavour. Neither is wrong, but only one of them tastes strongly of tea.

Whether the pack says it dissolves cold. If it does not say so, assume it does not. The workaround is to dissolve the powder in a splash of hot water first and then pour it over cold milk and ice.

Sweeteners and additives. Some products use aspartame and acesulfame K; others state they use none. Some carry emulsifiers, stabilisers such as CMC, and pH adjusters. Makers that leave these out say so on the front, so an absence claim tells you what the standard version contains.

Grams per cup. These mixes are formulated to a ratio, and the ratio differs. A 9.7 g stick and a 24 g stick are not the same drink, and a bag product that specifies 16 g per cup will empty faster than the size suggests.

Whether the milk is in the bag. Mixes containing milk powder need only water. Mixes without it need you to supply milk, which costs more per cup in milk but gives you plant-milk options and control over strength.

How to Make a Better Latte

Use the stated dose. Guessing produces a weak drink, and the usual reaction is to add more powder, which makes it sweeter rather than more matcha-like. Follow the grams on the pack first, then adjust.

Water just off the boil is fine for mixes. Unlike pure matcha, these powders are not damaged by hot water, and heat helps them dissolve fully.

For iced, dissolve first. Even with a cold-soluble powder, dissolving in a small amount of liquid before topping up with cold milk gives a smoother result and no sediment at the bottom.

Plant milks work, but change the balance. Oat milk is the most forgiving because of its sweetness and body. If you use a mix that already contains milk powder with a plant milk, you are layering milk on milk — the “add your own milk” formats suit this better.

Green specks are normal. Undissolved matcha particles floating or settling are the matcha itself, not a fault. Stir as you drink.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Japanese matcha latte powder has the most matcha?

Among the products with published ingredient lists, Ito En’s rich Kyoto Uji version places matcha third, which was the highest we found. AGF’s two products place it fourth, Tsujiri’s matcha milk fifth, and Nittoh’s sticks sixth.

Is matcha latte powder the same as matcha?

No. These are drink mixes in which sugar is usually the first ingredient and matcha is one component among several. Our guide to Japanese matcha powder explains the difference, and our best Japanese matcha guide covers pure matcha by purpose.

Can I make these with cold milk?

Only where the pack says so. Cold solubility is stated plainly by Japanese makers when a product has it. Otherwise dissolve in a little hot water first.

Do they contain caffeine?

Yes, in proportion to the matcha in them. The Nittoh sticks, for example, state 0.02 g of caffeine per 12 g stick. A powder with matcha sixth on the list carries less than one with matcha third.

Do they contain dairy?

Most do and declare milk in the allergen line. The “add your own milk” mixes and the unsweetened matcha powders do not. Always check the pack, as formulations change.

How long do they keep?

Longer than pure drinking matcha, which is often dated at two to three months, but they still lose aroma. Keep the bag sealed, away from heat, light and humidity, and finish it within a few months of opening.

Conclusion

The table at the top is the article. If you want one bag that does hot and iced, take a matcha milk that states cold solubility. If you want the most tea flavour, take the one with matcha third in the list and a named growing region. If you want control, buy a mix without milk powder, or skip the mixes and use unsweetened matcha. And if you drink one every day, the catering sizes cost a fraction per cup.
