You can buy Japanese mochi online from almost anywhere, but not every kind of mochi, and not from every seller, is worth ordering. Shelf-stable mochi, such as packaged snack mochi and kirimochi, ships well; fresh daifuku and mochi ice cream do not. And depending on where you order, you may not know until checkout, or even until the parcel arrives, whether the mochi is really from Japan, whether it can be shipped to you, and what you will pay in duties.
In this guide you will find:
- A quick comparison of the main ways to buy mochi online: kachicollect, Amazon, Shopee and Lazada, and proxy services
- What each option is good for, and what to watch out for
- Which kinds of mochi ship well and which do not
- What to check before you order, and how duties work

1. kachicollect (Direct From Japan)
kachicollect is a Japan-based shop that carries only products made for the Japanese market and ships them directly from Japan. There is no question about where the mochi was made, and you do not have to hunt through listings from different countries to find the real thing.
Mochi in the catalog. The catalog carries Seiki’s shelf-stable mochi from Ehime in four flavours, each an individually wrapped 130 g pouch: Amaou strawberry, white peach, sakura and Uji matcha. It also carries Tirol-Choco kinako mochi, a bite-size kinako chocolate with a chewy mochi centre. Our guide to Japanese mochi snack flavours covers the whole Seiki range.

Anything else by request. Kirimochi, seasonal mochi, specialty flavours and ingredients such as shiratamako or domyoji flour can be ordered with a purchase request. Send the product link from any Japanese site, including marketplaces such as Mercari and Yahoo! Auctions, and you get an instant quote to buy it directly on kachicollect, with no service fees.
The total, up front. You pay the item price plus shipping, and the total including duties is shown at checkout before you pay, the same way for every product. Payment is in your local currency by Visa, Mastercard or JCB, so you do not need a Japanese address or card, and orders ship worldwide with tracking in about 7 to 14 days.
2. Amazon
Amazon is convenient and familiar, and a search for “mochi” returns plenty of results. But for Japanese mochi in particular, there are three things that make it harder than it looks.
Duties are not always clear. Whether duties are included at checkout depends on the seller and how the item ships. For items eligible for Amazon’s international shipping programme, Amazon collects an estimated import fee deposit at checkout. For items from third-party sellers that ship another way, duties and taxes can be charged when the parcel arrives. In the same search results, some listings include duties and others do not.
Not every listing ships to you. Whether an item can be sent abroad is decided listing by listing. For food in particular, import regulations and the seller’s own choice mean some listings cannot be shipped to your country, and sometimes you only find out at checkout, when Amazon tells you the item cannot be delivered to your address.
Not every “mochi” is Japanese. Search results mix Japanese mochi with mochi made in China, Taiwan and elsewhere, and most listings are from third-party sellers rather than the makers. Check the maker’s name and the country of origin on the listing, and look for a best-before date, which is often not shown before you buy.
Browse Amazon with those three checks in mind, and use the “International Shipping Eligible” filter where your Amazon site offers it.
3. Shopee and Lazada
In the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, Shopee and Lazada are the go-to marketplaces, and you will find Japanese mochi on both, often with fast local delivery.
Most Japanese mochi on these platforms is sold by resellers, not by the makers. Shopee Mall is limited to brand owners and authorised distributors, so a listing outside Shopee Mall is usually a reseller. Listings marked as pre-order or shipped from overseas take longer to arrive, which eats into the mochi’s shelf life and means more time in hot warehouses and vans. Many listings do not state a best-before date, so message the seller before you buy.
4. Proxy Services
Proxy services such as Buyee, ZenMarket and FROM JAPAN buy from Japanese sites on your behalf and forward the items to you. They give you access to a huge range, but the fee shown upfront is only the starting point, and other costs are usually added along the way. They also buy at Japanese retail prices that include Japan’s 10% domestic consumption tax and pass it on to you, while kachicollect sells for export. A kachicollect purchase request gives you the same access to Japanese sites without proxy fees, with the total including duties shown before you pay.
What Mochi Ships Well
| Type | Keeps for | Can it be shipped from Japan? |
|---|---|---|
| Packaged snack mochi (such as Seiki’s pouches) | Months, sealed at room temperature | Yes |
| Kirimochi | Months, sealed at room temperature | Yes |
| Mochi chocolates and mochi sweets | Months, sealed at room temperature | Yes |
| Fresh daifuku, sakura mochi, warabimochi | One to three days | No |
| Mochi ice cream | Frozen | No |
If you want fresh mochi, your best option is a Japanese shop near you; our country guides below list them. For a sweet you can make at home, see our sakura mochi recipe and easy mochi recipes.
What to Check Before You Order Mochi Online
Where it was made. Look for the maker’s name and “Made in Japan” on the listing or the pack. “Japanese-style” does not mean it was made in Japan.
The best-before date. Shelf-stable mochi keeps for months, but the clock starts at the factory. The longer a pack has spent with resellers and in warehouses, the less time you have left.
Allergens. Plain mochi is rice, but flavoured mochi can contain milk, soy or wheat. Seiki’s sakura mochi, for example, lists milk. Our guide on whether mochi is gluten-free shows how to spot wheat on a Japanese label.
The total cost. Check whether duties and taxes are included before you pay, or whether they may be charged on delivery.
Heat. In a hot climate, choose a seller that ships quickly, and store mochi somewhere cool once it arrives.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you ship mochi internationally?
Shelf-stable mochi, such as packaged snack mochi and kirimochi, ships well because it keeps for months at room temperature. Fresh daifuku and mochi ice cream cannot be shipped internationally.
How long does packaged mochi last?
It depends on the product. Seiki’s snack mochi pouches, for example, keep for 150 days from manufacture at room temperature. Once opened, eat them quickly.
Can I buy kirimochi online?
Yes. Kirimochi is shelf-stable and ships well. It is not in the kachicollect catalog at the moment, but you can order any kirimochi from a Japanese site by sending the product link as a purchase request.
Why is some “mochi” on Amazon not Japanese?
Mochi is made in several countries, and marketplaces list them together under the same search term. Check the maker and the country of origin to be sure you are buying Japanese mochi.
Conclusion
Buying mochi online is easy; buying the right mochi takes a little care. Amazon and Shopee are fast and familiar, but duties, shipping eligibility, origin and freshness vary from listing to listing, and proxy services add fees in stages.
